Survival horror title Outlast for Xbox One now on Xbox store

Costs £15.99 / US$19.99 / AU$26.95

Like a creature rising from the depths of your own psychological hell, indie survival horror title Outlast has appeared out of nowhere and is now available to buy on the Xbox Store.

Previously only available on PC and PS4, Outlast pits you as journalist Miles Upshur, who breaks into the Mount Massive Asylum and discovers what the release blurb calls "a terrifying line between science and religion, nature and something else entirely". Developed by Canadian outfit Red Barrels, Outlast is a first-person affair that game designer and Red Barrels co-founder Philipe Morin describes as containing "intense violence, gore, graphic sexual content, and strong language". As sister site CVG notes, various critics reckon it's a pretty good thing.

Great news. What's odd is that it breaks Microsoft's platform parity agreement that stipulates a game must be released on Xbox at the same time as other platforms. Nor were Red Barrels on the first list of confirmed ID@Xbox developers. However, Microsoft's director of ID@Xbox program, Chris Charla, said developers concerned about the clause "should email me!"

You can put your cash on Outlast right now, but you won't be able to play it until June 24.

Nintendo Hopes to Share 2D and 3D Metroid News "in the Near Future"

A new Metroid game wasn't announced at E3 this week, but it sounds as if one (or more) are, at the very least, being considered.

Nintendo is well aware of fans' desire to see both 2D and 3D Metroid games in the future. In fact, it's hoping to share news regarding both styles "in the near future," according to Nintendo's Shinya Takahashi.

In an interview with Kotaku, the subject of a new Metroid was brought up. Shigeru Miyamoto responded by saying, "The original creators of Metroid and the director who was the director of the Metroid Prime games who worked under me when I was producing those both now work for Mr. Takahashi, so you'll have to ask him."

Takahashi then shared some tantalizing information: "So it has been a while since we released the last one and we're having discussions internally about what we can do next. So at this point we have two different types of Metroid games. We have the Prime style of Metroid game and we have the more traditional style of Metroid game. We feel that we do need to take care of both of these styles of play. And the hope is that at some point in the near future we'll be able to share something about them."

Many gamers expected a new Metroid to be unveiled at E3 this week when Nintendo scheduled a lengthy event to announce a 3DS game on Wednesday night. Instead, we learned that game would be a new IP, which proved to be Code Name: STEAM, a strategy game from Fire Emblem and Advance Wars developer Intelligent Systems. Metroid wasn't seen at all during E3, unless you count Samus appearing in Super Smash Bros.

The most recent game in the Metroid series was 2010's Metroid: Other M, the Team Ninja-developed action game for Wii that many fans bemoaned for its treatment of Samus' character. Prior to that, it was Metroid Prime 3: Corruption in 2007. In other words, the series has been mostly quiet for much of the last decade--which is exactly how long it's been since the last 2D Metroid game (Metroid: Zero Mission for Game Boy Advance) was released.

To many, a new Metroid seems like an obvious way to drum up excitement for the Wii U, which has struggled since its launch in November 2012. One thing we do know about the next Metroid is that series co-creator Yoshio Sakamoto is unlikely to be involved; after working on Tomodachi Life, he said earlier this year that he isn't interested in returning to traditional games.

The first artworks for Rise of the Tomb Raider on Xbox One

I've got a couple of Tomb Raider stories in the works. To begin with, here are the first three artworks for Rise of the Tomb Raider, a sequel to 2013's origin story, in which the still rather traumatised Lara Croft must explore a Lost City and contend with a mysterious group of assassins. Oh, and at least one bear. Hey, it's better than fighting a T-Rex, right?

Out in holiday 2015, the game will appear on Xbox One but not Xbox 360. Lara is once again voiced by Camilla Luddington, who will "take character performance to new heights as Lara pushes herself beyond human limits and is confronted with what it means to become a hero". Beyond that, we're in the dark. Much like Lara, then. What do you think of the announcement trailer?

Rise Of The Tomb Raider Coming Holiday 2015 (article and trailer)

New instalment in Tomb Raider franchise debuts during Microsoft conference, but no exclusivity announced.

Rise Of The Tomb Raider, a sequel to last year's Tomb Raider reboot, has made its debut during Microsoft's E3 press conference with a holiday 2015 release date. While Microsoft made the reveal, no platform exclusivity was announced.

The debut took the form of a new trailer, which showed Lara speaking to a psychiatrist while reminiscing about some of her latest adventures. Falling off a cliff, flares, and a sweet crossbow all featured in the trailer.

Lara's previous adventure, Tomb Raider, was released in 2013 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Windows PC. Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition, an updated version for the Xbox One and PS4, was released earlier this year.

Happy Wars coming to Xbox One

Toylogic's free-to-play tactical RPG Happy Wars is coming to Xbox One. This new version will include a host of new characters and gameplay elements, although the details of these extra elements have yet to be revealed.

The original game hit Xbox Live Arcade in 2012. We liked aspects of it, but felt it was a little superficial on the whole. Perhaps this new version will add a bit of depth.

The game will be released on November 11th exclusively for Xbox One and will come packed with the Halo 5: Guardians beta.

Here Are the 2014 Games That Have Been Delayed to 2015

Christmas is ruined.

Is it just me, or does it feel like we've seen a bunch of games get delayed over the past few months? E3 2014 might be on the horizon, so we'll see a lot of titles unveiled for the 2014 holiday season next week, but here are some of the games that none of us will be playing until next year.

Batman: Arkham Knight

Batman: Arkham Knight went from announced to delayed in just under three months, and if that's not a record then it must be pretty close. Rocksteady marketing manager Guy Perkins said to GameSpot that "we want to make sure we're absolutely nailing it 100 percent."

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Polish developer CD Projekt RED insisted that the hotly-anticipated, open-world RPG The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt would have been ready for its original fall 2014 release, but it still delayed the game to February 2015. Why? So the game could reach a "quality that will satisfy us, the quality gamers expect from us."

The Order: 1886

PS4 exclusive The Order: 1886 is still shrouded in mystery, even after Sony attempted to show off the game back in February. But we do know the third-person adventure, and its intriguing Victorian London setting, won't be out in 2014. "As we keep on pushing on this game, we really want to deliver on the experience that we promised," said Ready at Dawn creative director Ru Weerasuriya to GameSpot.

Quantum Break

Quantum Break never had an official release date, but everyone expected to see it in 2014. That's not happening. The Xbox One-exclusive title, a mix of a third-person action game with time-bending powers and a live TV show, will be arriving in 2015. Don't expect it to appear at E3 2014, either; developer Remedy says that we'll see it next at Gamescom in August.

Dying Light

Dying Light is a parkour-inspired open-world title from the makers of Dead Island where you kill zombies. A whole bunch of zombies. But the game has now slipped to 2015 because developer Techland wants to improve the free-running mechanics. "After careful consideration, we have decided to release our upcoming game in February 2015," said Techland in a statement to GameSpot. It'll be at E3 2014 next week.

The Division

This one was obvious, really. After its apocalyptic world was first unveiled at E3 2013, nobody really thought The Division would see the light of day in 2014--one developer is even reported to have said the idea was "laughable." Ubisoft kept maintaining that the release date was accurate, though. Right up until the point that it wasn't.

Mad Max

Mad Max is the next game from Avalanche Studios, the team behind Just Cause 2, and it was supposed to be coming out this year. Vehicle combat is said to be a major focus, as you might expect. I imagine the Thunderdome will also feature. But, really, is this game being made instead of Just Cause 3? Did the Mad Max delay make Max Madder? We'll have to find out in 2015.

Valve's Steam Controller

Delays aren't limited to software, of course. Valve recently announced that the Steam Controller, which features haptic feedback instead of traditional thumbsticks, wouldn't see its way into our curious hands in 2014. Valve product designer Eric Hope said that the development team is currently conducting live playtests, but that "we're now looking at a release window of 2015, not 2014." Cue gag about Valve Time and something something something Half-Life 3.

Crackdown 3 will be announced for Xbox One today, claims report

"Source" pops the cork on another Xbox exclusive

The nigh-mythical Crackdown 3 will be announced at tonight's Xbox E3 press event, according to a Develop source. Rumour has it that the game will be a "game" of some description, which can run on hardware that plays games, such as either the Xbox One or the Xbox 360 or both or neither. Sorry, there's not much to add at this stage.

Microsoft's Phil Spencer has been throwing around the idea of a new Crackdown for months. Last June, he suggested that it would only happen "given the right team and time", but added that the franchise's mix of open world chaos and online co-op would be a "natural fit" for the Xbox One cloud. Crackdown 2 developer Ruffian has denied any involvement.

Personally, I'm very much of the opinion that a new Crackdown needs to happen, but I'm concerned that it would compete with Insomniac's Xbox One exclusive Sunset Overdrive - also a colourful, co-op-heavy open world actioner with OTT traversal abilities and weapons. What do you think?

Far Cry 4 on PS4 announced – The Himalayas! Mad kings! Plus, it’s out 21 November 2014!

Ubisoft has just announced Far Cry 4 and its release date, with the open-world shooter coming to both PS4 and PS3 this 21 November. As months of rumours suggested, the game is indeed set in the Himalayas.

Here’s the first full press release…

“Today, Ubisoft announced Far Cry® 4, an open-world, first-person shooter that delivers the most expansive and immersive Far Cry experience ever. Far Cry® 4 will be available November 21 in the UK for PlayStation 4® computer entertainment system, PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, Xbox One, the all-in-one games and entertainment system, Xbox 360 games and entertainment system from Microsoft and Windows PC.

Development on Far Cry® 4 is being led by Ubisoft Montreal in collaboration with Ubisoft’s Red Storm Entertainment, Ubisoft Toronto, Ubisoft Shanghai, and Ubisoft Kiev.

In Far Cry® 4, players find themselves in Kyrat, a breathtaking, perilous and wild region of the Himalayas struggling under the regime of a despotic self-appointed king.  Using a vast array of weapons, vehicles, and animals, players will write their own story across an exotic open-world landscape.”

Exciting, eh? Though quite why publishers think Thursday evening at 5pm is a good time to announce your megaton new FPS is anyone’s guess. The new snowbound setting is at least incredibly exciting, and marks a stylistic change for the traditionally tropical series on a par with Call Of Duty’s brand of warfare going Modern. We’re hoping that animals bit means the heavily rumoured rideable elephants have made the cut. C’mon controllable Dumbo.

Homefront 2 on PS4 announced? Site listing points to new-gen shooter sequel with Crytek at the helm

Edit: Though the boxart has now been removed from FZ, the page still exists.

Boxart for Homefront: The Revolution, Crytek’s sequel to Kaos’ 2011 FPS Homefront, has appeared online on Swedish website FZ. No details beyond that it’s a first-person action shooter due in 2015 have been given so far.

In a trend-bucking move, no PS3 version is listed on the site. Should games still be released cross-gen, or is it time for new-gen-only titles? And what are your hopes for the Homefront series now that visual wizard Crytek is in charge?

Halo 5: Guardians Announced

2k The next chapter in the Halo franchise will launch on Xbox One in 2015.
BY MARTY SLIVA UPDATE: 343 Industries Executive Producer Josh Holmes clarified on Twitter that the blue-visored Spartan seen in the image below is neither a robot Cortana nor Halo 4's Sarah Palmer. Rather, "He's a NEW character. :)"

Also, a piece of Halo 5 concept art has been released by 343i.

343 Industries has revealed that Halo 5: Guardians will launch on Xbox One in the fall of 2015.

Bonnie Ross, general manager at 343, made the announcement on a blog post that detailed the future of the Halo franchise as a whole. Ross talked about Master Chief's next journey, saying, "Halo 5: Guardians is a bigger effort than Halo 4. That applies to the content and scope of the game, as well as the technology in what’s now a brand new and more powerful engine. Certainly there are some core elements carried over from prior games, but we’ve invested a huge effort in retooling our tech to take full advantage of the Xbox One’s hardware and ecosystem to create worlds and experiences worthy of next-gen."

The game will run "at 60 frames per second, on dedicated servers, with the scope, features and scale we've been dreaming of for more than a decade," and will also be powered by a new engine.

We got our first glimpse at the next generation of Halo at Microsoft's E3 2013 press conference, which featured a short teaser showcasing the iconic character trudging across a desert in a poncho.

Ross also hinted at what we'd see from the franchise at this year's E3, stating, "Many fans noted that I was very deliberate with my phrasing on stage at E3 last year. I spoke about a 'journey,' rather than a destination – and that journey definitely begins in 2014 with a giant leap, rather than one small step. We’ll give you much more information about our plans for this year at the Xbox E3 2014 Media Briefing on June 9, and we’re confident that Halo fans will be pretty excited [about] the special plans we have in store."

We'll have much more on the future of Halo leading up to and through E3 next month.

Sega's E3 Plans Feature Sonic, Alien: Isolation, and Hatsune Miku

Sega outlines what to expect from its E3 showing this coming week.

With E3 2014 so close to kicking off, Sega has announced the slate of games it plans to have on show during the event, and it consists of a lot of Sonic and the most promising Alien game in years.

Unlike fellow third-party publishers Electronic Arts and Ubisoft, Sega won't be hosting a press conference of its own. Regardless, it will have a handful of its upcoming games on display. More specifically, we'll be seeing Alien: Isolation (Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC), Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric (Wii U), Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal (3DS), and Hatsune Miku: Project Diva F 2nd (PS3 and PlayStation Vita).

It's not a huge number of games for a company that used to have a much larger presence at the annual conference. But with it not making sports games or hardware like it once did, the company has less to show, although it is curious that only one of these four games is actually developed internally by Sega.

Keep in mind, these plans don't preclude Sega from still making a surprise announcement of some sort--I've got my fingers crossed for word on a Western release of Phantasy Star Online 2, and others are no doubt hoping for a new Yakuza. For now, though, these are the only Sega games we'll definitely be seeing this coming week.

E3 kicks off on Monday with press conferences from Microsoft, EA, Ubisoft, and Sony, followed by Nintendo's pre-recorded show on Tuesday. You'll be able to watch all of this and follow along with the week's happenings right here on GameSpot.

E3 2014 Rumors

With this year's event just around the corner, we round up some of the hottest rumors.

E3 2014 is now just days away. We're expecting a bevy of announcements from Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo, as well as third-party publishers like Ubisoft and Electronic Arts, which alone plans to make six announcements at the show. It promises to be a busy week in Los Angeles, but there's already a considerable amount of buzz built up thanks to a slew of rumors about what we may see at the show.

We have rounded up some of these rumors and provided details below. We will continue to update this story as more rise to the surface, and please don't hesitate to ping us to share rumors directly. For more on E3, check out GameSpot's roundup of everything you need to know about this year's show.

Make-Your-Own Mario Game for 3DS.

Nintendo Enthusiast has obtained an image from Nintendo's booth on the E3 show floor that features an unannounced 3DS game called Mario Maker. Going off the picture alone, it looks like you'll be able to create your own levels in the Mushroom Kingdom. Sounds fun! But is it real? We'll find out next week.

NFC Figurines for Super Smash Bros.

Nintendo France said that the upcoming Super Smash Bros. is going to take advantage of the Wii U's NFC capabilities. Pair that with the confirmation by Nintendo of more figurine details at E3 and you don't have to stretch your imagination to put the two together. Will these miniatures involve unlockable characters? We'll find out during the E3 Nintendo Direct.

Grand Theft Auto V comes to Current-gen

We've been waiting a long time for GTA 5 to come to PC (at this point it's taken longer than the same port for GTA 4), but maybe part of the reason for the delay is that the game is also being optimized for current-gen consoles.

Rockstar has said that they plan on releasing an Xbox One/PS4 game this fiscal year. While that could be the recently renewed Agent, an update of one of the best-selling games of all time seems a little more likely at this point. But the bigger question: Will it be a timed exclusive for Sony or Microsoft?

Dance Central 4

While talking about the Xbox One price cut and removing Kinect from Xbox One with Microsoft's Yusuf Medhi, he casually said, "Certainly some gamers are Kinect-focused, say Kinect Sports Rivals, Dance Central." While it's possible that he was referring to an Xbox 360 version of the game or the franchise in general...but it's also possible he accidentally leaked an upcoming Dance Central reveal.

Neither Harmonix nor Microsoft responded to follow-ups about the game, but E3 may give a lot of gamers a reason to use their Kinect for more than voice commands.

More PlayStation 4 HD Remakes

A lot of rumors have leaked about current-gen remakes of the Halo games, but we've heard rumblings that Sony has their own HD reveals as well. We already know about The Last of Us for PS4 update, but you can expect a few more games to get a chance for more exposure. The most surprising rumor we've heard: some of the PS4 updates might come from the Vita.

New Mortal Kombat [CONFIRMED]

UPDATE] As expected, Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon revealed the next game in his fighting series: Mortal Kombat X. And just in case you're wondering he clarified that it's pronounced "ex."

[ORIGINAL] Ed Boon has been teasing an announcement for the past few weeks, and while that's set to fall on Monday (pre-E3), we're guessing that the inevitable Mortal Kombat reveal will also make a big splash at E3.

Big Third-Party Xbox One Exclusive

An reliable source has confirmed that Microsoft is going to have at least one "big" third-party exclusive reveal during their stage show. We don't know the exact game, but our source said the game is both something "unexpected" and "something people will be really excited about."

Halo: The Master Chief Collection

Microsoft says the "journey" to Halo 5: Guardians (2015) will begin this year, but what could that mean? According to Engadget's sources, Microsoft is bundling Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3, and Halo 4 in a special package for Xbox One called the Master Chief Collection. There's no word on whether nor not Halo 3: ODST or Halo: Reach would also be included. Those are not "core" installments in the series, so we wouldn't be surprised if they were left out.

 Majora's Mask on 3DS

Maybe Nintendo is just playing with nostaligic fans' hearts, but Nintendo has made several references to the N64 classic over the years, including a Skull Kid cameo in Smash Bros. and decorative mask in Link Between Worlds.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Collection for PS4 and Xbox One

Earlier this month, Reddit user GTA678 posted an image of a "Modern Warfare Collection," which will reportedly bundle Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 in a special package for PS4 and Xbox One. The games will all reportedly run in 1080p at 60fps, with new textures, lighting effects, and sounds. Rumor has it this bundle will launch November 25 and even contain exclusive content for this fall's Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare.

Battlefield Hardline [CONFIRMED]

That escalated quickly.

Battlefield Hardline isn't much of a rumor any longer, as Electronic Arts this week confirmed that the game is indeed real and developed by Dead Space creator Visceral Games in conjunction with DICE. The developer's VP took to Twitter today to say that a leaked trailer for the game is six months out of date, and we already have the official trailer from EA below. The game is slated for Oct. 21 on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC.

Project Beast for the PS4

Stemming from images posted on 4Chan and circulated on popular gaming forum NeoGAF, this is reportedly the working title for a new game from Demon's Souls and Dark Souls studio From Software in conjunction with Sony Japan. Demon's Souls creator Hidetaka Miyazaki--now president of From Software--worked on this year's Dark Souls II only in a supervising role; he focused most of his attention on an unannounced mystery game. Is Project Beast this game? We may not have to wait much longer to find out.

Dark Souls free to Download on Xbox live Gold

Dark Souls is free to download on Xbox live gold.

The game is being offered as part of Xbox’s Games With Gold promotion, which is now celebrating its one-year anniversary by adding an extra free Xbox 360 game to its usual allotment of two. The two other free games for June are Charlie Murder, a beat-em-up released last August, and Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition, the most recent version of the fighting game.

Nvidia Working With Ubisoft on Assassin's Creed Unity, Far Cry 4 PC

Nvidia is helping to bring "Hollywood-levels of smooth animation" to Ubisoft's upcoming titles.

According to a press release, Ubisoft and PC technology company Nvidia are working together on the PC versions of Assassin's Creed Unity, Far Cry 4, and other Ubisoft games. This announcement continues a partnership that began with last year's Splinter Cell: Blacklist.

The press release states that Nvidia's support will allow the upcoming Ubisoft titles to incorporate more advanced tech and perform better than they otherwise would have. Ubisoft specifies that Nvidia's GameWorks team will bring "cutting-edge" graphics tech to the games. This includes "TXAA antialiasing, which provides Hollywood-levels of smooth animation, soft shadows, HBAO+ (horizon-based ambient occlusion), advanced DX11 tessellation, and Nvidia PhysX technology."

Ubisoft Vice President of Marketing Tony Key says, "Working with Nvidia has enabled us to bring an enhanced gameplay experience to our PC players… Through GameWorks, we have been able to add unique visual and gameplay innovations to deliver amazing experiences for these stellar Ubisoft games."

Recently, though, the GameWorks partnership has sparked controversy with the release of Ubisoft's Watch Dogs. Many users are reporting performance problems for Watch Dogs on PCs using AMD hardware. As a result, Nvidia's rival AMD has claimed that GameWorks tech "deliberately [cripples] performance on AMD products to widen the margin in favor of Nvidia products."

In the last few months, Ubisoft has released an announcement trailer for Assassin's Creed Unity and cover art for Far Cry 4. Both games will be at E3, so keep an eye on GameSpot for news, previews, and impressions of all upcoming Ubisoft games.

Dark Souls 2 gets three new chapters in Lost Crown Trilogy DLC

Coming in July, prepare to be smote

After saying "no we won't" and then "maybe we will do Dark Souls 2 DLC, three new chapters have been announced for From Software's punishing RPG. Also, the past tense for 'smite' is 'smote', not 'smited'.

Called 'The Lost Crowns trilogy', you'll explore and fight through new areas of the world against new enemies small and very large, while conquering what the press release calls "diabolic challenges".

First up, Crown of the Sunken King, flings you off to retrieve the crowns of Dark Souls boss King Vendrick, and you'll be traipsing through underground caverns to find it. Get your hands on it after battling past the guards that will be protecting the treasure and you'll be bestowed with a headpiece that "holds the strength of lords from times long past".

Crown of the Old Iron King takes you to a tower shrouded by black mist, where the pathways are designed to deceive you amongst the flames and smoke. The final chapter, Crown of the Ivory King, changes the weather and location again. You'll fight enemies that draw their power and "esoteric abilities" from the freezing storms that whip around an ancient tower, having to contend with low visibility on the way.

You can subject yourself to this challenge/punishment starting from July. Crown of the Sunken King goes on sale in Europe and Australasia on July 22, Crown of the Old Iron King is out August 26 and Crown of the Ivory King on September 23. A local Namco Bandai rep couldn't confirm pricing on individual chapters or the season pass, so stay tuned.

After 10 Years, Sony Discontinues PSP

Lifetime sales totaled more than 76 million units.

The PSP's days are numbered.

Sony announced today that the portable gaming device, originally launched ten years ago, will be discontinued worldwide by the end of 2014. The Associated Press reports that PSP shipments ended in North America in January, are scheduled to end in Japan this month, and will come to a close later this year in Europe. Sony is now, of course, pushing the platform's successor, the PlayStation Vita.

Sony has sold more than 76 million PSP units, though that figure is accurate as of the latest officially tally, which came two years ago. The actual lifetime sales figure is likely somewhat higher. The PSP debuted in Japan in December 2004, before coming to the West in early 2005.

The PSP enjoyed a significantly longer lifespan than the digital-only PSP Go, which Sony launched in 2009 and discontinued just two years later. Meanwhile, Sony launched the PS Vita in March 2012, and just recently released a slimmer, lighter version of the device worldwide.

Assasin΄s Creed Unity DLC Revealed by poster

Assassin's Creed Unity will be getting a bonus mission as pre-order DLC, according to a new GameStop poster.

The below image was posted on Twitter by CriptAssassini, and shows a retailer-specific pre-order offer called Chemical Revolution. Alongside giving us a glimpse at the face of our new protagonist, the poster also includes a man many are speculating is Antoine Lavoisier, the father of modern chemistry.

Assassin's Creed Unity was leaked last month (along with Assassin's Creed Comet), and Ubisoft confirmed the PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One title days later. Assassin's Creed Unity appears to be set in Paris and will reportedly come out later this year, with rumours also surfacing that four-player co-op may be on the cards.

With E3 kicking off next week, hopefully we'll get a chance to see much more of the title in action very soon indeed.
