Valve working on new game engine

Cofounder Gabe Newell has confirmed that Valve is creating a new game engine — most likely Source 2.

"We've been working on Valve's new engine stuff for a while," he told members of 4chan, who personally delivered Newell a 50th birthday present this month. "We're probably just waiting for a game to roll it out with.”

Back in August, files found in Valve's Source Filmmaker program clued us in to a next-gen engine in development.

The original Source engine went public in 2004 with the games Counter-Strike: Source and Half-Life 2.

Modern Warfare 4 in 2013?

It does not take a seasoned industry watcher to predict that Activision will make a new Call of Duty game in 2013, but first details on this project have come to light. Siliconera has heard from a source that next year's Call of Duty will be a continuation of the Modern Warfare series.
The main character of this unannounced title is a "battle-hardened veteran in his mid-thirties with a nihilistic point of view," the source says, and voice-overs for the game are currently under way in Los Angeles, California.

This news follows a report from last month, when voice actor Bill Murray (Captain Price) reportedly confirmed Modern Warfare 4. Murray later denied having said anything on the matter, and Infinity Ward called the report "speculation."

An Activision representative was not immediately available for comment.

The Modern Warfare story arc began in 2007 with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Sequels Modern Warfare 2 and Modern Warfare 3 were released in 2009 and 2011, respectively.

Diablo III Expansion Confirmed by Blizzard

Blizzard has confirmed that Diablo III will receive an expansion. During an earnings call for the third quarter of Activision Blizzard’s current fiscal year, Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime said that an expansion is currently planned, but no timeline is in place just yet for when it might be released. Morhaime noted that the quality of the expansion and its gameplay is the top priority, and both will be a “big factor” in driving the actual schedule of the release.
Elsewhere in the call, Activision Blizzard also mentioned that more than 10 million copies of Diablo III have been sold to date, expanding upon the number of players revealed in August. Activision CEO Bobby Kotick referred to “Blizzard’s record-shattering Diablo III sales” as one of the primary drivers for earnings so far this year, with Activision noting in a statement that Diablo III is “the #1 bestselling game in dollars and units on the PC in the U.S. and Europe” since its release in May.

Gears of War series sales hit 19 million

The Gears of War series has reached a new sales milestone. Microsoft revealed to Joystiq today that the third-person shooter franchise has now moved 19 million units life-to-date.
Microsoft did not break down sales figures for specific games, though it is known that Gears of War 3 managed to sell 3 million units during its first week on sale in September 2011.

Additionally, the first two Gears of War titles sold a combined 12 million units, suggesting Gears of War 3 has added an additional 3 million sales to its total, in line with former design director Cliff Bleszinski's hopes.

The next entry in the Gears of War series is Gears of War: Judgement, which is due out March 19, 2013 exclusively for Xbox 360. Developed by Epic Games in conjunction with Bulletstorm studio People Can Fly, the project focuses on series soldier Damon Baird and will not use the Kinect.

Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition pushed to Nov. 30

Post date: Sep 14th 2012
From:  Richard Mitchell

It looks like fans will have to wait for Baldur's Gate to swing open once again, as Beamdog head Trent Oster has revealed that Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition has been delayed. Writing in the Baldur's Gate forums, Oster noted that the overwhelming response to the project – and the resulting influx of volunteers, additions and fixes – has lead Beamdog to push the project back from September 18 to November 30.

In other words, it sounds as if the project has grown larger than Beamdog originally intended. "The suggestions, fixes, and translations continue, and more volunteers keep joining," wrote Oster, adding that Beamdog has delayed the project to provide "the best possible product on launch."

Oster asks for patience from fans, promising "something a little extra" is in the works for those who have already pre-ordered.

DmC uses visual tricks to look better than 30 FPS, Capcom says

DmC: Devil May Cry will run at 30 frames per second instead of 60, the gold standard of previous games in the franchise. But Capcom told Eurogamer it hopes to work some of the magic it learned with Dragon's Dogma to make the fast-paced title feel just as smooth despite less frames per second when it launches on January 15.

"[At] 30 frames per second there's a technique where you take advantage of the brain's ability to fill in the blanks, said series director Hideaki Itsuno. "So even though you have it running at 30 frames per second, you create the motions and the poses in such a way that the brain will naturally fill in what would have been the extra frames."

Animation is itself a form of trickery: the brain is fooled into perceiving a series of still images as in motion if they are displayed in rapid enough succession. Itsuno said a combination of animations and post-processing effects the publisher first tried in Dragon's Dogma squeezes some more distance out of this illusion while sparing more processing power for impressive environments and visual effects.

The game, which is being developed by UK-based Ninja Theory, runs on Unreal Engine 3 and is a reboot of the franchise with a redesigned protagonist. Ninja Theory said the game could have run at 60 FPS, but only at the cost of said improved effects.

Itsuno even claimed that too-high frame rates can actually be tiring for gamers, as they seem to "almost shake or flash."

We've never met a high frame rate we didn't like, but what do you think? Would you rather have a flashier game that's a bit less smooth or one with buttery bare-bones visuals?

Bethesda Confirms Skyrim Dragonborn DLC

Bethesda has officially unveiled the next expansion pack for Skyrim called Dragonborn.
Available on Xbox Live from December 4 for 1600 Microsoft Points, details are pretty scant as to what the expansion will actually offer.

A trailer has been unveiled, which does offer some insight into what we'll be getting, especially when taken in conjunction with what we heard last week about the next DLC's rumoured content.

The trailer appears to out the DLC's antagonist; the first Dragonborn from ages past who ruled over the island of Solstheim, which lies to the North East of Skyrim. It looks like that's where the DLC will be set, marking the second time the island has appeared in an Elder Scrolls game (the first being the Morrowind expansion, Bloodmoon).

Other that that information about the expansion is scarce. What's got us most excited though, following on from last month's report, is that it looks pretty much guaranteed that we'll be taking to the skies on dragonback for at least part of our time in Solstheim; whether this will be on-rails or not remains unclear.

There's been no word on whether the DLC will come to PC and PS3. The first two expansions, Dawnguard and Hearthfire, enjoyed 30 days of exclusivity on Microsoft's console. Due to continuing problems though, neither have made it onto the PlayStation 3 as yet.

No Halo 4 on PC

Halo 4 is not coming to the PC. A Microsoft representative told The Penny Arcade Report that though the company is seeking new ways to boost the popularity of the series, bringing 343 Industries' new shooter to the PC is not a means to this end.
Halo 4 was designed specifically for Xbox 360, and while we're always exploring new ways to expand the franchise and share the Halo experience with as many fans as possible, we do not currently have any plans to port Halo 4 to PC," a Microsoft representative said.

Microsoft ported Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2 to the PC, but all subsequent entries in the series have arrived only for consoles.

Halo 4 launched worldwide today exclusively for Xbox 360. The game is a direct sequel to 2007's Halo 3 and is the first numbered entry in the series developed outside of Bungie Studios. It is the first installment in the Reclaimer Trilogy, which will span Halo 5 and Halo 6.
